TomatoMania! Growing tomatoes in containers Welcome
to TomatoMaina!
Start with a container that is at least 15 inches wide and deep with a drain hole. Wooden or pulp containers don’t heat up like terra-cotta or plastic. If you do use plastic pots, choose lighter colored ones to prevent super-heating roots. Fill pots with Gardener’s Gold Organic Potting Soil for growing edibles in containers. This mix combines 85 percent peat moss with seafood compost, composted barnyard manure, and perlite, giving plants what they need to thrive in a pot. Plant your seedling deep. Mix some Coast of Maine lobster fertilizer into your planting hole to give tomatoes a calcium boost. Add a stake or cage to support your plant. Water seedlings after transplanting. Keep soil consistently moist through the growing season. A layer of mulch can help keep soil moist and moderate soil temperature. The best way to tell if your pots need water is to lift the edge. Learn how the container feels after watering—heavier. As soil dries out, the pot will become lighter. When you water, soak the soil surface several times. Watch for water to run from the bottom of the pot before you stop watering. Fertilize plants at least every two weeks. Intermittently throughout the growing season, use a foliar feed, a water-soluble fertilizer you spray on leaves.
